Anne Carter was electric in the circle Friday evening, striking out 11 batters in a complete game effort to guide the Holy Redeemer Varsity Royals to a 6-3 win over Berwick.
From the jump, it looked like it might be a back-and-forth affair. Berwick struck first in the opening frame on a Yaritza Rivas RBI double, and retook the lead in the second after Ashlyn Klahold delivered an RBI single. But the Royals weren’t fazed.
In the fourth inning, the momentum shifted. Lauren Hayden stepped to the plate and launched a two-run homer to left field, flipping the game in Holy Redeemer’s favor, 3-2. That blast lit the spark.
The Royals tacked on two more in the fifth and one in the sixth, extending their cushion behind clutch hits and heads-up baserunning.
Carter powered through seven innings, giving up eight hits but staying composed and in command throughout. She walked only two and threw 81 of her 118 pitches for strikes.
Hayden and Grace Stetz-Madden each tallied two hits, with Hayden collecting a team-best two RBIs. Carter, Brill, and Genovese also reached base for the Royals, who showed solid balance at the plate.
Berwick was led by Klahold and Morgan Siegel with two hits each, while Rivas, Klahold, and Welsh each drove in a run. Makayla Brown pitched the full game for Berwick, striking out six in the loss.
Holy Redeemer now turns their attention to a road matchup with Hanover Area on Tuesday.
