Brotherly Love

During the introduction of the players for the 91st Scranton Lions Club Dream Game this evening at John Henzes Veterans Memorial Stadium, fans may hear some familiar last names from two very successful Lackawanna Football Conference programs.

These players will not be deceived, as this year, younger siblings will follow in the footsteps of their older brother(s) by participating in the longest high school all-star football game in the nation, the 91st Scranton Lions Club Dream Game. Make no mistake about it, these players playing in this game Wednesday evening know what this game is and means. They have all heard the stories, the rich storied history, past players, the money raised to help the Lackawanna Blind Association, legends of this game, the unforgettable moments and plays, and most importantly, the rivalries that have became friendships.

Logan Edwards from Lackawanna Trail is not unfamiliar with the Dream Game. It’s practically in his DNA. Jeff Edwards, Logan’s father, was a standout at Lackawanna Trail and played in the 1989 game. His two older brothers, Jordan and Miles,  participated in the 2019 and 2022 games . While Logan plays in his final game for the City squad, he’s also looking for bragging rights by hopefully bringing home a win , something that eluded brothers Jordan and Miles and father Jeff.

Jordan Edwards’ played in the the 2019 game after helping lead Lackawanna Trail to two district championships in 2016 and 2018 and the 2018 Class 1A State Championship game in Hershey. Jordan’s efforts at his free safety and running back made him a unanimous selection to participate in the 2019 Dream Game. Jordan now gives back to the game that treated him so well in high school as he now serves as an assistant coach for the Lackawanna Trail freshman football team.

Miles Edwards was a force for the Lions and their Wing-T offense at his tight end position and defensive end that helped the Lions win two district championships in  2019 and 2021 . What made the 2022 Dream Game more special for Miles was that he got to play for his legendary coach from Lackawanna Trail, Steve Jervis who coached the City squad along with the rest of the Trail coaching staff.

This year, youngest brother Logan will be suiting up for the City squad one last time. Logan who participated in the PSFCA East-West All Star game in the spring where he said there was great competition and a chance to meet new people and coaches, Logan was a unanimous pick as he helped the Lions win 3 straight District 2 1A championships, 2022-2024 A force on both sides of the ball at his FB and LB positions, Logan looks to bring the same if not more intensity in his final game.

Logan, from his fullback position hopes to block one more time for his Lackawanna Trail teammate, running back Demitrius Douglas, who also heard the same stories about the game from his older brother Cross Douglas who played in the 2021 classic, a game where the County mounted a comeback and edged the City 31-29.

Cross, a four year starter and team captain at Lakeland High School was a dominant force on both the offensive and defensive line gaining numerous first team awards on the local level and was named to the PFN Coaches All State 2nd team in 2020. Cross helped lead the Chiefs to the District 2 3A Championship in 2020. Cross later went on to play at the collegiate level at Millersville University.

Demitrius received good advice from his older brother Cross about following and reading blocks as he rushed for over 900 yards and 16 TD’s and averaged almost 8 yards per carry in his senior season. For his career, Demitrius rushed for over 2,100 yards and 33 scores with another 5 touchdowns on the receiving end. Demitrius was even a bigger force on the defensive side of the ball as an outside linebacker tallying up 63 total tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. These efforts did not go unnoticed as Demitrius was selected to the PA Football Writers All State Team in Class A. Like Edwards, Demitrius was an integral part of helping Lackawanna Trail win three straight District 2 1A championships.

 No place like home:

Valley View grad RB/DB/ATH Nick Kucharski will get to buckle up the chin strap one last time as he gets the honor of playing the Dream Game for the County squad on his home field. To what this experience will be like, he can turn to his older brother A.J., who played in the 2023 game, a game that saw the first overtime finish in the history of the Dream Game as the County edged the City  23-20. A standout from his LB position, A.J. helped lead the Cougars the 2022 District 2 4A Championship and was a multi sport athlete excelling in basketball and track and field. A.J. went on to play football at Wilkes University.

Nick was a member of the 2024 District 2 4A championship team for the Cougars and played a pivotal part on both sides of the ball. At DB, Kucharski was a force, totaling 141 tackles, 8 interceptions and 43 passes defended during his illustrious career that gave Nick the nickname “The Glove”. On the offensive side of the ball, Nick rushed for almost 900 yards and 7 TDS in his senior season. Nick was also a starting guard for the Cougars basketball team that claimed its first district championship since 1997 and made a trip to the PIAA Final Four. After the Dream Game, Nick will continue his football and academic career at Lackawanna College.

One thing is for certain: as quoted by all the players, past and present, the most important thing that sticks out is that they are teaming up with their fellow teammates one last time and those that come from other teams/schools…. That rivalry now takes a back seat to a new found friendship…… and brotherhood.
