In a high-stakes District II AAA semifinal showdown, Riverside battled back from an early deficit and leaned on a brilliant relief outing from Nicholas Bohenek to defeat Western Wayne, 5-2, and punch their ticket to the championship game.

Western Wayne jumped out early with two runs in the top of the first inning. Damian Glackin and Jamie Chapman each delivered RBI singles to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.

But Riverside didn’t flinch. The Vikings tied it up in the third behind timely hitting from Jason Posluszny and Chase Taddonio, then took the lead in the fourth when Cooper Borowski knocked an RBI single and Taddonio added another run on a groundout.

From there, it was all Bohenek on the hill. Entering in relief of Connor McNally, Bohenek was flawless, tossing five no-hit innings with five strikeouts and two walks to earn the win. McNally allowed six hits and two earned runs over the first two frames.

The Vikings’ offense was balanced and efficient. Taddonio, McNally, Borowski, Kulikowski, and Posluszny each collected one hit. Taddonio led with two RBIs, while Posluszny and Caleb Sosa each knocked in one.

Western Wayne got six hits from six different players: Grodack, Maiocco, Durso, Lamberton, Glackin, and Chapman. On the mound, Lance Maiocco went 3.1 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits while striking out three. Mike Durso finished the game, surrendering one more run over 2.2 innings.

Riverside turned a double play and committed one error, while the Wildcats had two miscues defensively.

With the win, Riverside advances to the District II AAA Championship game.
