In a world where professional athletes often follow the money trail, Kevin Major’s story is one of rare conviction, grit, and vision. In his second year as a professional basketball player, Major made a decision that raised eyebrows across the international hoops community—he turned down a lucrative contract offer in Qatar to sign with SG Mannheim in Germany 🇩🇪, a team in a more competitive but less financially rewarding market.
But for Major, the move was never about the money.
“This decision wasn’t about the check,” he says. “It was about betting on myself, putting myself in an environment where I could truly grow, and working with a coach who believes in my potential.”
That coach was Mert Ersoy, who saw something in Major that many others overlooked—an explosive guard with a high IQ, a relentless work ethic, and leadership qualities that go far beyond the box score. “When a coach has faith in your skill and trusts your work ethic, it changes everything,” Major says. “That kind of trust fuels you.”
And fuel him it did.
In just 14 games this season with SG Mannheim, Major lit up the court, averaging 19.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. His shooting percentages were impressive, and his impact undeniable. He quickly became one of the best players in the league, earning a spot on the prestigious Eurobasket Third Team—an incredible accomplishment for someone only two years into his pro career.
Yet, those who followed Major’s path know this wasn't a sudden breakout. Last season in Albania, he was already showing signs of what was to come. Suiting up for Partizani, Major averaged 18.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game, leading the team in points, assists, and steals. That season laid the groundwork—Germany was the next step in his deliberate climb.
“I’m never satisfied,” Major says. “Each season, the goal is to get better and add something new to my game. I’m building a résumé, step by step, with the aim of moving up.”
What makes his journey even more compelling is where it began—the Bronx, New York. A place known for its toughness, its culture, and its unforgiving streets. “Not many make it from where I’m from,” he says. “I’m blessed and fortunate to be where I’m at. I know how rare this opportunity is.”
There’s a certain pride and perspective that comes from that background. It’s evident in how Major speaks, how he plays, and how he makes decisions. Turning down financial security in Qatar for the developmental crucible of German basketball is not a typical move. But then again, Kevin Major is not your typical athlete.
His story is still being written, but it’s clear the chapters ahead are going to be even more exciting. With a mindset rooted in growth, a skillset that continues to evolve, and a chip on his shoulder from being overlooked, Major is poised to rise through the European ranks—and perhaps beyond.
For now, though, he remains focused on the mission.
“I’m just getting started,” he says with a smile. “I’ve got a long way to go.”
