GLENBURN — In a back-and-forth battle for the District 17 11U Little League Championship, Abington answered the call with clutch hitting and steady pitching to defeat South Scranton, 5-3, Tuesday night at Ackerly Field.

South Scranton struck first, jumping out to a 3-0 lead through the first two innings. Darion Norton drew a bases-loaded walk in the first to put his team on the board. In the second, walks to Peanut Williams and a run-scoring groundout by Zayden Thompson gave South Scranton early momentum.

But Abington responded in a big way in the bottom half of the second. Evan Ross launched a momentum-shifting home run over the left-field fence, cutting into the lead. Peter Adair drove in a run on a fielder’s choice, followed by Murphy Lyle’s RBI single to center. Caleb Engerman added another run with a fielder’s choice, giving Abington a 4-3 edge.

The bats stayed hot in the third when Bradley McDonald roped a single to left, driving in the fifth and final run of the night for Abington.

McDonald led the offense with a 2-for-2 day at the plate, while Ross played a standout two-way game, finishing with a home run and eight defensive plays in the field.

On the mound, Carson Walsh got the start, striking out three over 1.1 innings. Vincie Pricci came on in relief and was dominant down the stretch. Allowing just two hits and no runs over 4.2 innings, striking out three to lock down the win.

South Scranton stayed competitive throughout, drawing eight walks as a team. Joe Pica led the offense with a 2-for-3 night, while Williams and Dustin McDonnell each worked two walks. The defense flashed as well, turning a double play to keep things tight.

With the victory, Abington captures the District 17 championship and now advances to the Section 5 tournament, where they’ll face Valley View (District 32), Back Mountain (District 31), and Greater Pittston Area (District 16).
