DUNMORE — Abington stormed out of the gate and never looked back in Tuesday’s District 17 Majors Little League showdown, defeating West Scranton 23-4 in a game fueled by big bats, sharp plate discipline, and relentless pressure on both sides of the ball.
Max Vazquez led the charge for Abington, driving in four runs on three hits. The standout slugger launched a two-run homer to center field in the second inning and doubled home two more runs in the fourth.
Abington wasted no time getting on the board. In the top of the first, a passed ball plated two runs before Grady T. doubled to bring home another. Dylan Lyle worked a bases-loaded walk and Jaxon Hizny followed with a two-run single to stretch the early lead.
The offense exploded again in the second inning, as Abington hung a 10-run frame behind a two-run triple by James Kane, Vazquez’s two-run homer, RBI singles from Grady and Hizny, and productive outs that brought in additional runs.
Penn Eckenrode added a run-scoring single in the third before Abington capped the night with a six-hit, six-run fourth inning. Lyle and Hizny picked up RBI knocks, Patrick K. and Kane chipped in singles that scored runs, and Vazquez closed his big night with a two-run double.
On the mound, Hizny opened with a no-hit inning, striking out two despite walking four. Justin J. tossed two scoreless innings in relief, allowing just two hits while striking out two and walking one.
Abington racked up 17 hits as Grady, Eckenrode, and Kane each collected multiple knocks. The team also showed great patience, drawing 12 walks—led by Lucas D, Lyle, Oliver G, and Kane, who each had two free passes.
For West Scranton, Ben D. drove in one run and finished 1-for-2. Garren C, Cullen K, Connor K, and Melo Gantz each added hits, while Jackson G. drew a team-high two walks. Despite the loss, West Scranton played a clean game in the field, committing no errors with Cobb handling four chances.
The win advances Abington deeper into District 17 play, while West Scranton will look to bounce back.
