In an intense AAA District semifinal matchup, the Western Wayne Wildcats nearly staged a dramatic comeback against the Wyoming Area Warriors. Down 21-9 at halftime, with Warriors’ star Kellum putting up nearly 130 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, the Wildcats faced an uphill battle.
Senior Josh Vinton ignited the Wildcats’ resurgence in the second half, leading them to four touchdowns, pushing the game into double overtime.
Lidge Kellum finished the game with 5 tds to lead the Warriors, but a heroic effort by Anthony Delucca on the final drive in regulation with under a minute to play; Delucca found Kevin Wiedl for 34 yards to set up 1st & goal.
Kellum scored on the next play, making it 29-27, and Delucca took a scramble around the left edge to take the game to OT.
However, a failed two-point conversion after Vinton’s 4th touchdown ultimately sealed the win for the Warriors in the extra session, who now advance to play Scranton Prep for the 3A title next Friday night.
In what could arguably be considered the game of the year, both teams played with heart and determination, but the Warriors emerged victorious in this one, 36-35.
