Returning to his roots in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Siena Saints’ junior guard Justice Shoats delivered a stellar performance against Bucknell, propelling his team to a 71-58 triumph. Competing at Mohegan Arena at Casey Plaza—a venue where he once showcased his high school prowess—Shoats tallied 19 points, shooting 8-for-15 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line.
This game held profound significance for Shoats, a former standout at Holy Redeemer High School. During his high school tenure, he amassed over 1,500 points and earned Pennsylvania Sports Writers Class 3A All-State Second Team honors. He was also a three-time Times Leader All-Wyoming Valley Conference selection and a two-time Player of the Year honoree. His return to this familiar court symbolized his evolution from a local star to a collegiate athlete. Shoats’ impact was immediate, opening the game’s scoring and maintaining consistent contributions throughout.
The homecoming was equally poignant for Siena’s head coach, Gerry McNamara, a Scranton native who had previously played at the same arena during his senior year at Syracuse. This matchup marked the first NCAA Division I men’s basketball event at Mohegan Arena in 19 years, amplifying the emotional resonance for both Shoats and McNamara.
Shoats’ return to Wilkes-Barre transcended the game itself; it was a celebration of his roots and a testament to his development as a player. His impressive performance not only fueled Siena’s victory but also underscored the enduring bond between an athlete and his hometown community.
