The atmosphere was electric at Holy Cross as a packed house of students, faculty, alumni, and fans filled the gymnasium for a playoff-caliber showdown. Both communities—Riverside and the Crusaders—turned out in full force for this highly anticipated matchup, creating a standing-room-only environment worthy of its billing.
For Holy Cross, the big stage is nothing new. Fresh off a State Playoff run last season that ended with a runner-up finish to the Aliquippa Quips at the Giant Center, the Crusaders came prepared to make a statement against the top-ranked Riverside Vikings.
Matt Lyons was the star of the night, leading the Crusaders with an outstanding performance of 18 points and 14 rebounds. His dominance in the paint set the tone early, while Michael Hughes added 11 points of his own, helping Holy Cross maintain control throughout the contest.
On the other side, Riverside struggled to find their rhythm. The Vikings’ offense, typically high-powered, looked uncharacteristically out of sync against the relentless hustle and intensity of Holy Cross. The Crusaders’ suffocating defense left little room for Riverside to operate, turning the game into a one-sided affair.
Freshman sensation Nico Antoniacci, who has been a key player for Riverside all season, managed just 13 points. His efforts were stifled by CJ Thompson, who shadowed him closely all night, disrupting his usual offensive flow.
Holy Cross left no doubt in this matchup, cruising to a dominant 59-29 victory. Their energy and execution were unmatched, leaving Riverside searching for answers.
Fans from both sides now circle January 24th on their calendars for the much-anticipated rematch. With emotions running high and both teams eager to prove themselves, Round Two promises to be a thriller. As the saying goes, “Get your popcorn ready!”
