Eugene Lewis: Faith, Family, and Football — A Journey of Dedication and Triumph

In the world of football, where physical prowess and strategic decisions are often spotlighted, Eugene Lewis, known affectionately as Geno,  stands out not just for his on-field achievements but for the profound faith and family support that have propelled his career. From his early struggles as a teen to becoming a standout player in high school, college and later professional football, Lewis’s story is one of resilience, dedication, and unwavering belief.

Growing up, Geno faced his share of challenges. As a young teen grappling with the complexities of adolescence and athletics, he struggled to find his footing. Recognizing his need for a stable male role model, his mother—whom he lovingly refers to as his “rock”—made the difficult decision to have him move in with his father. The move brought him to the Wyoming Valley West School District and then later, Meyers, in the Wilkes-Barre Area. This move was pivotal, providing Eugene with the support and guidance he needed during a crucial period in his life.

Lewis’s journey took him to Penn State University, where he played four seasons of football. His college career began with a redshirt year, allowing him to acclimate to the demands of Division I football and the rigorous academic environment. Lewis’s dedication and hard work paid off as he graduated in just three and a half years, a testament to his commitment both on and off the field. His time at Penn State laid a solid foundation for what would become a remarkable football career. Geno played his final year of college football at the University of Oklahoma where the Sooners secured a Big 12 Championship.

Post-college, Geno embarked on a professional football career which landed him in the Canadian Football League (CFL), joining the Montreal Alouettes in 2017. His journey in the CFL has been marked by continued success and growth. Geno spoke of a one-handed catch, while with the Alouettes, that brought him recognition.  Vernon Adams Jr., Geno's QB at the time, delivered a pass that seemed destined to be out of reach. But Lewis, ever the determined receiver, stretched his frame and made an improbable one-handed catch that left fans and analysts alike in awe. For Geno, the catch was more than just a personal achievement; it was a moment of validation. It solidified his status as a premier receiver in the CFL. The catch was not just a highlight reel moment but a pivotal play that brought Lewis into the spotlight. Now in his second season with the Edmonton Elks, Lewis has solidified his reputation as a key player with a knack for making crucial plays.

Eugene Lewis has consistently credited his success to his faith. “Without God, none of this would be possible,” he often says, emphasizing how his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has been a guiding force in his life. This deep sense of faith has provided him with strength and perspective, helping him navigate both the highs and lows of his athletic journey.

Geno's journey in football is marked by a relentless pursuit of excellence. With a career that reflects his dedication, skill, and love for the sport, he aspires to etch his name among the legends of the CFL Hall of Fame. This prestigious honor is reserved for those who have not only excelled on the field but have also made a significant impact on the league's rich history. Parallel to his Hall of Fame aspirations is Geno’s fervent desire to win the Grey Cup—the CFL’s equivalent of the NFL’s Super Bowl. The Grey Cup is more than just a championship trophy; it symbolizes the pinnacle of Canadian football achievement.

Lewis’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact of faith, family, and perseverance. From his early struggles and the support of his mother and father to his successful college and professional career, his journey underscores the importance of resilience and the profound influence of a supportive network. As he continues to excel on the football field with the Edmonton Elks, Eugene Lewis remains a testament to the idea that with faith and determination, dreams can indeed become reality.
