The Valley View Cougars clinched the District 2 Class 4A championship by defeating the Dallas Mountaineers 41-14. The victory was marked by a remarkable second-half surge, where Valley View scored 35 unanswered points to overturn a halftime deficit.

First Half: A Competitive Start

The game commenced with Valley View’s quarterback, Zach Cwalinski, executing a 4-yard touchdown run, though the subsequent extra point was blocked. Dallas responded assertively; quarterback Brady Zapoticky connected with wide receiver Gavin Lewis for an 11-yard touchdown pass, followed by a 12-yard rushing touchdown by Zapoticky, establishing a 14-6 lead for the Mountaineers at halftime.

Second Half: Valley View’s Dominance

The second half witnessed a pivotal shift in momentum. Early in the third quarter, Valley View’s defense made a crucial stop on a fourth-and-goal situation, preventing Dallas from extending their lead. Capitalizing on this defensive stand, Cwalinski broke free for a 54-yard touchdown run and successfully executed a two-point conversion, tying the game at 14-14.

The Cougars maintained their offensive momentum in the fourth quarter. Cwalinski added two more rushing touchdowns of 27 and 4 yards, respectively. Defensive back Nick Kucharski significantly impacted the game by intercepting two passes, returning one for a 30-yard touchdown. The game concluded with Valley View’s Ben Evans recovering a Dallas fumble and returning it 85 yards for a touchdown as time expired, sealing the 41-14 victory.

Key Performances:

Cwalinski led Valley View’s offense, rushing for 147 yards and four touchdowns. Running back Preston Reed also delivered a strong performance, contributing 142 rushing yards. The Cougars’ defense was instrumental in the second-half surge, forcing turnovers and limiting Dallas’s offensive production.

Critical Play: Special Teams Impact

A pivotal moment occurred when Dallas’s Gavin Lewis fielded a kickoff at his own 5-yard line and executed a remarkable return, weaving through Valley View’s coverage team. As he approached midfield with a clear path ahead, Valley View’s kicker, Braden Loff, made a crucial open-field tackle, preventing a potential touchdown that could have shifted momentum and brought Dallas within one score. This play was instrumental in maintaining Valley View’s lead and contributed to their eventual victory.

Half-Time Performance:

The Dallas High School Marching Band delivered a captivating halftime performance themed “Hey Yo!” Under the direction of Jeff Brown, the ensemble transformed the field into a vibrant farm scene, complete with hay bales and scenic backdrops, immersing the audience in a rustic atmosphere.

The band members embraced the theme wholeheartedly, donning straw hats, Overalls and much more to enhance the visual appeal. Their musical selections featured country tunes, resonating with the audience and adding to the festive ambiance.
