On January 25, 2025, Susquehanna Community High School hosted its annual "Coaches vs. Cancer" event, uniting students, faculty, and community members in a heartfelt evening dedicated to cancer awareness and fundraising.
Organized by event coordinator Joanna Soden, the night featured engaging activities such as raffles, a 50/50 drawing, an alumni basketball game and concessions, with all proceeds directed toward cancer research.
A poignant highlight from that evening was the Survivor Walk, where cancer survivors and their families took a commemorative lap around the gymnasium, receiving warm applause and support from attendees.
Adding to the inspiration, guest speaker Nickie Hegarty shared her personal journey of resilience and hope as a cancer survivor.
In a spirited move to encourage fundraising, Principal Richard Emmons, himself a cancer survivor, challenged the student body with a promise to shave his head and grow a mustache if they met the fundraising goal of $4,000.
The Sabers community rose to the occasion, surpassing the target, leading Principal Emmons to honor his pledge and high school secretary, Tammy Heller, received the honor of giving Principal Emmons the haircut.

The success of this event underscores the collective commitment of the Susquehanna community to combat cancer through awareness, support, and fundraising efforts.
The team at Sportzwire commends the entire Sabers community for the time and effort to make Coaches vs. Cancer a success!
